What the Doctors Found!
A little snippet of information that all you healthy food addicts probably knew all along and perhaps now the rest of us will take note. It has now been confirmed by scientists that good ole fruits, you know like, apples, nectarines and peaches for example have been underestimated. They really are far better for us than we had previously been led to believe. Its now been discovered that they contain key antioxidant levels, so perhaps now the meek little Apple will become the new Acai Berry! Just joking!!!
The Institute of Food Research in Norwich UK discovered the content of a super chemical called Polyphenol during their research on fruits and it was found to be up to 5 times higher than had been previously recorded.
Dr Paul Kroon said: “In the human body these compounds will be fermented by bacteria in the colon, creating metabolites that may be beneficial, for example with antioxidant activity.”
The research, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, shows the chemical which is normally not considered by food chemists – is an important part of a healthy diet. Professor Fulgencio Saura-Calixto, who led the project, said: “These polyphenols are major constituents of the human diet with important health properties” To consider them in nutritional and epidemiological research may be useful for a better understanding of the effects of plant foods in health.”
Looks like our Mothers and Grand Mother were right all along, when they used to say “an apple a day keeps the Doctor away” and “eat your greens and live to be a 100 “ So, now you know what you really must include on your shopping list from now on!
