Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray Disc™ : the new generation of optical disc formatting and developed by the Blu-Ray Disc association (BDA) that includes electronic brand leaders like Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Phillips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson. The Blu-ray disc system is replacing the current DVD technology and enables the recording, rewriting and playback of modern high-definition videos (HD) that requires huge amounts of data.

Blu-ray Discs can hold more than 5 times the data that could be stored on conventional DVDs and there are double layer discs as well.

(Sony’s PS3 video gaming machine incorporates Blu-ray and is arguably one of the best Blu-ray players and is also a gaming console).

How does it work?

Basically – Blu-ray, as the name might suggest, uses a blue-violet laser that with its shorter wave length can be focused with far greater precision than the old red laser reader. Meaning: more than 5 times more data can be packed into the same size disc so 25GB of data stored to a single layer disc and 50GB to a dual layer disc.

Blu-ray technology is supported by the leading consumer electronics makers, including major computer brands, as well as the film, music, and video game industries. Blu-ray is acknowledged as the successor to the DVD. The market preference now for High Definition Digital TV has heightened the need for high definition players and recorders to compliment the unparalleled HD visual and audio experience.

Major film studios have announced their intention to release new, as well as back catalogue, films to be available on Blu-ray as well as DVD so if you are considering upgrading to a high definition television (HDTV) then you might want to consider a Blu-ray player or player/recorder.

Whilst Blu-ray discs cannot be played on the old red laser type players, Blu-ray players will not only play your old DVDs (so your favorites library is not obsolete) and in fact may well actually enhance the quality when playing your old discs via your new Blu-ray player on your new full HD TV.

Blu-ray is currently being incorporated into computer PC technology with readers and writers built-in but for those of us with decent recent spec gear we can buy add on readers/writers to upgrade our exiting PC setup.
