Watching bonsai trees grow and forming them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and very rewarding hobby. Growing bonsai isn’t an expensive hobby with not many tools being required, but a beautiful bonsai tree can be more of a centrepiece in your home than many  expensive ornaments. A bonsai tree is a true living sculpture.

Bonsai are pot planted plants or trees that are grown to be small versions of the natural size plant. Bonsai trees can be created from almost any perennial woody stemmed trees and shrubs that grow branches and can develop in miniature through container confinement with the aid of root and crown pruning.

Bonsai trees can be developed from seeds, from young shoots taken from the countryside, (please observe any local laws regarding removing wild plants in your region), or can be bought as mature planted bonsai trees. Obviously growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest route, but you do have total control over how your bonsai will grow.

Bonsai are grown in containers that not only restrict root development, but are also designed to further enhance the beauty of your bonsai. Special soils are available that give you the ideal conditions for your bonsai tree to develop.

Many specialist methods are used to shape and give character to your bonsai tree including leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting on other plants, dwarfing and deadwood, (a method of aging bark). Only a few specialist tools are required to sculpt bonsai trees, and these are easy to come by very cheaply. Everything you require to get started can easily be purchased from a bonsai nursery.1214852_bonsai_tree

Bonsai can be had as both indoor and outdoor types, many bonsai trees are improved if they are left outside in the summer and then brought inside during the colder winter months.

For those that like the idea, but would rather not get involved in growing bonsai, you can even purchase artificial bonsai trees.

If you are wondering if developing bonsai is for you, I would say have a go, bonsai trees are easy to grow and maintain, and take a small amount of your spare time, every bonsai tree is individual, and who doesn’t admire a bonsai every time they see one.
