What you need to Know!

There are 3 things that you need to be concentrating your efforts on in order to lose weight and these are, your eating habits, your lifestyle and how physically active you are. We will be focusing on exercise for the purposes of this article and some forms of exercise are better than others if you want to lose weight.

For sure, running will speed up your metabolism but only whilst you’re running and after a while your metabolism reverts to its normal overweight rate, which is slow.

If you concentrate your efforts into building muscle, and girls, I don’t mean turning yourself into a top body builder here, I just mean that you need to build up some muscles on your body and then this whole weight loss issue will become much, much easier to control.

Well, you need to get yourself enrolled into a Gym that has a weight room and if you have the money hire a personal weight trainer to learn the ropes. Even with all the information available about healthy food and the importance of some exercise in your life, people are still putting on weight and it’s getting to the point of being a serious epidemic. Maybe you been following a weight loss diet plan for several months with little in the way of success and you are left wondering why you can’t lose weight?

Why does it happen?

It’s such a common occurrence and lots of people complain about piling on the pounds in the winter. Unfortunately, as we get older we don’t always lose them again once the summer arrives as we once did and this is when we notice the scales nudging ever upwards every year. Why does winter weight gain happen and is there a solution?

1088523_himba_people_1It is something that has probably been programmed in us from way back when we were hunter gatherers. It was vital for the survival of the species to be able to store up fat from the autumn food bounty to see them through the winter, animals do the same thing now, in order to give them the energy to stay warm and keep them going until food stocks became plentiful again. Subconsciously, we are still probably eating foods that contain high levels of fat in the autumn for this very reason.

There are obviously many reasons for gaining weight in the winter and one of these is that hormones and other chemicals in the brain and can trigger food cravings. It has been reported that some neurotransmitters can also influence the way we eat by causing an increase in our appetite. This can also lead to depression and even problems sleeping.

How can we stop it?

During the short days of winter with only a few hours of daylight, can lead to some people being affected with what’s called “seasonal affected disorder” leaving them feeling quite depressed and it’s at these times that there is a strong temptation to eat high carbohydrate foods like chips, sweet treats and cereals.

So, being depressed can make people eat the wrong foods, known as comfort eating, which results in them putting on weight, this then causes them to be even more depressed and so the cycle goes on. It’s all these things add to the winter weight gain problem that’s hard to break.

When we snuggle up on the settee on those dark cold winter nights it’s so comforting to eat things like chocolate, crisps, cookies and nuts but unfortunately, they are all high in fat and sugar. So, try to substitute these with chopped up pieces of chicken or turkey which is very filling and low in fat, or chopped up fruit or vegetables to snack on. One of my favorites is a bowl of cooked whole oats sweetened with low calorie sugar substitute, again, very filling and low in fat if you use fat free milk to cook it with.

The other culprit is lower physical activity because it’s so much nicer to stay snuggled up at home in the warm than to be bothered going to the gym or the local swimming pool and instead we turn into couch potatoes. We have to remember that we are no longer cave men and we don’t need to store food away to survive the winter, there is plenty available all year round so get yourself signed up at the gym or start regularly running around the block or buy an exercise bike but whatever you do, do something active to get your metabolism burning up those excess calories instead of storing them as fat and the winter weight gain can be a thing of the past.

#Even though it appears that some fat people seem quite fit and have huge amounts of energy it still spells trouble according to the Mayo Clinic. They say that carrying all that excess fat, no matter how fit you are, is still putting a huge strain on the heart.

The question is: is it possible for overweight people to be healthy and fit if they exercise regularly? To a degree, yes they can because even if they spend 30 minutes a day being active, it does make a difference and its certainly far better than no exercise at all. The difference will be seen as blood pressure and cholesterol levels both drop and the improvement in circulation will leave you feeling good.

The good thing about being fit but fat is that you don’t feel exhausted after climbing a flight of stairs or running a short distance however, the Mayo Clinic say that exercise may make you feel as though you are healthy but you cannot get away from the fact that being overweight attracts serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease and apart from the health problems associated with being overweight, there is also the devastating emotional impact:

Low self-esteem and loss of confidence
The feeling that your opinions are not valued by anyone
Not being taken seriously
Humiliation and feeling of being looked down on.

It can be these emotional feelings that can hurt the most and in the short term do the most damage so it is really important that you try to do whatever is needed to get back the life you deserve.

If you are overweight, you will be pleased to know that studies have shown that even someone not classed as being overweight, is just as much at risk if they don’t exercise as someone who is considered fat and fit.

This is because our bodies have been designed for regular physical exercise in order to function properly. So, being able to maintain a regular weight without exercise is simply not enough and you need to try to be active, even if its just a brisk walk for just 30 minutes a day and at least 5 times a week.

So, if you are thinking of picking up those car keys to pop to the store, then just put them down again, put on some comfy shoes and get those feet a walking.
